Bokova also approved setting up of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development in New Delhi with UNESCO’s help.
“I am convinced that education for sustainable development based on the interdependence of environment, economic, society, and cultural diversity, is the key to a better and more just word of the this century,” Bokova said.
Bokova sole purpose of the visit is to strengthen ties with government and collaborating with academic institutions to facilitate UNESCO goals.
Meanwhile, HRD minister Kapil Sibal during his meeting with Bokova offered support to UNESCO in the area of science and technology. “India could support UNESCO towards preparing an Information Communication and Technology module for dissemination in the developing world,” Sibal said.
Sibal also thanked Bokova for UNESCO’s approval in the setting up of the institute in Delhi.
Bokova complemented India in its efforts in education policy, especially in the passing of the Right to Education Act in Parliament.
Bokova also signed the agreement with IGNOU after which she delivered a special lecture for the university’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.
Bokova is on a 5-day visit to India. Besides Delhi she will also be visiting Jaipur, Chennai, Bangalore and Puducherry.
Her visit comes barely two months after the visit of last director-general Koichiro Matsura.
